Stanford University’s Center for Innovation in Global Health with the help of NBC News has launched a Fellowship in Global Health Media. This opportunity is open to medical students, residents, fellows and faculty who want careers in global health and want to learn how to be effective change agents. During a period of 12-months, starting in June 2012, the Global Health Media Fellow will apprentice and experiment with various media platforms including journalism, print, photography, television and social networking. UAB Continuing Education Certificate in Global Health Studies

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Sparkman Center for Global Health is accepting applications for its 2011-2012 Continuing Education Certificate in Global Health Studies (GHS) program. This online certificate program is aimed towards enhancing the ability of current and future health professionals to further develop analytical skills and apply solutions to current and emerging global health challenges. The courses are relevant for professionals who already work in global health as well as those who have an interest in expanding their skills and knowledge in this discipline.

GHS certificate program courses are offered in accordance with UAB’s academic calendar. The core courses are offered during the 12-week summer semester calendar (May- July annually). Electives are offered on an annual basis throughout the academic year. Electives include: Environmental Health and Sanitation in Resource-Limited Settings, Disabilities and Global Health, Food and Nutrition in Resource-Limited Settings, Critical Issues in Global Maternal and Child Health, Infectious Diseases of Global Significance, and Refugee Health.

“Sexual Identity, Health and Stigma in India: Traditional Statuses and Western Influences” Webcast

During the past decade, a collision of indigenous and foreign influences has rendered salient changes to what it means to be a man who has sex with other men (MSM) in India. The repeal of Penal Code 377 and the first male to male “Bollywood kiss” are tangible manifestations of a shift in social and sexual mores. Through a lively discussion featuring international and multidisciplinary scholars, this roundtable will explore the critical influences relevant to male sexual identity and health in India today.

Northwestern Highlights International Programs, Collaborations at Global Health Week

Northwestern University held its first-ever Global Health Week April 5-8 on the Evanston and Chicago campuses. The event welcomed almost 40 institutional partners from across the globe — physicians and researchers from more than a dozen countries, including Chile, France, India, and Nigeria. Through a series of talks and networking events, the University introduced foreign and domestic guests to its global health efforts and to countless opportunities for expanding collaborations.

Lumbreras Tropical Medicine Course 2012

The Lumbreras Tropical Medicine Course is offered yearly by the Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt. This 4-week course is targeted at 3rd and 4th year medical students. Participants will learn about tropical medicine and infectious diseases through lectures, clinical rounds and laboratory sessions at the major tropical disease referral center of Peru. All activities are in English and a maximum of 24 participants will be accepted. The 2012 course dates will be April 2-27 and registration starts on July 1st. Over 90 students from medical schools in the US, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, the United Kingdom, and Australia have previously participated in this course.

Social Medicine Course in Northern Uganda

We invite medical students to apply for the third annual Beyond the Biological Basis of Disease: The Social and Economic Causation of Illness, an on-site immersion course in social medicine offered at Lacor Hospital in Gulu, Uganda from January 9, 2012 through February 3, 2012. This intensive course designed for 15 international medical students (clinical years) and 15 Ugandan medical students (3rd-5th year) from Gulu University intersects the study of clinical medicine in a resource-poor setting with social medicine topics such as the social determinants of health, globalization, war, human rights, community-based health care, and narrative medicine. This highly-interactive course is taught through a combination of lectures, small and large group discussions, films, community field visits, ward rounds, and clinical case discussions. Credit for away-rotations can be arranged.
