Member Highlights: Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia
The Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) is the leading biomedical research institution in Peru, and is engaged in health and scientific research that is funded by national and foreign entities including universities, government agencies, and foundations. UPCH is first among all Peruvian institutions in scientific production, according to Latin American Ranking Scimago Institutions Rankings (SIR) in 2012, and plays a critical role in developing the next generation of health professionals in Peru and abroad.
UPCH is home to eight Schools and three research institutes that provide undergraduate and graduate education in medicine, dentistry, public health, nursing, sciences and philosophy, veterinary medicine and zoology, psychology, and education.
UPCH houses the only School of Public Health and Administration in Peru, which offers a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Health Administration, as well as Public Health and Global Health, amongst other degrees. The BSc in Public Health and Global Health, jointly created by the UPCH and Pan American Health Organization, is the only degree of its kind in Latin America, and focuses on promoting population health and wellbeing through a multidisciplinary approach.
Its offerings include the Global Health Peru Program which offers rotations and courses to international students during the entire year. Our Global Health Research Experience rotation pairs international students with an ongoing research project in public health under the supervision of a faculty member. Existing research projects include increasing poor, pregnant women's access to health systems, improving mechanisms of maternal and child health education through text messages, and reducing child morbidity and complications during pregnancy through the introduction of syphilis rapid testing.
