PRESS RELEASE | FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Over 250,000 Americans have died from COVID-19. The number of people dying, nearly 2000 per day, is the equivalent of 10 large airplanes crashing and killing everyone on board, every day. This loss is inexcusable. Most of these deaths are preventable. The Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH), the world’s largest consortium of academic institutions addressing global health challenges, is calling on President Trump to ramp up the production of personal protective equipment (PPE) through the Defense Production Act (DPA) and call on states to use mandatory mask mandates and other known public health measures.
The COVID-19 pandemic is out of control. The failure of the White House to act will result in thousands of preventable American deaths. This will include frontline health workers who are risking their lives to save the lives of others. As of November 18th, 1,396 US healthcare workers have died from COVID-19. On the frontlines they are burning out and running out of PPE.
“Effective leadership will save lives. Inaction or the spreading of misinformation will cost lives. President Trump and his administration have full authority to act now and implement life-saving measures. The choice is theirs.” said Dr. Keith Martin, CUGH’s Executive Director in Washington, DC.
