The University of Illinois College of Medicine’s Center for Global Health has issued a statement condemning the sterilization of women being held at the Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia. These serious allegations add to the growing list of human rights abuses that have been reported in ICE detention centers across the United States. The UIC Center for Global Health emphasizes that detained persons are incredibly vulnerable to abuse and a loss of their right to autonomy, particularly when making medical decisions. The statement also advises that providers caring for people in detention should take additional steps to counteract the power dynamics that exist and ensure that their patients are able to exercise their right to self determination and receive appropriate counseling and care.
