Congenital heart disease is the world's most common major birth defect. Less than 7% of the population has access to life-saving congenital heart surgery in the developing world, where congenital anomalies are the eighth leading cause of death in children.
Not every global health challenge can be eradicated through health promotion and disease prevention. Advanced, tertiary level care is imperative for the treatment of heart defects in children born with these conditions.
