The MBChB program at Mulungushi University School of Medicine and Health Sciences is based on a six year hybrid curriculum with a prominent component of public health and community engagement. It is a new School with only two intakes so far (2nd and 3rd years). In the first year school leavers do foundation courses at the Mulungushi University Main Campus in the School of Science Engineering and Technology. After the first year, the best 80-100 students whose first choice is to do medicine are quartered into the second year in School of Medicine and Health Sciences. In the second and third years students cover mainly basic medical sciences in a system based approach with early clinical exposure. In the fourth and sixth years students will do their junior and senior clinical rotations respectively in Pediatrics, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology. In the fifth year students will cover Medical and Surgical Subspecialties, Psychiatry and Public Health. In the first three years in the medical school students will be exposed to early principles of public health in the form of community based education where they will go into villages collect demographic data for their reports; and in the fifth year they will undertake more advanced public health projects and write reports at the end. Upon successful completion of the program, at the end of the sixth year, students will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)
