Hologic Global Women’s Health Index Overview

A mission of the Hologic Global Women’s Health Index, as established by Hologic, Inc., is to convene groups of academics, women’s health leaders, policymakers, global and country leaders to use these unique data from women and girls aged 15 years and older (further referred to as “women”) covering 94% of the world’s population showing the current state of women’s health and as a guide and strategic framework for action. The objectives of this grant program are to empower the global credibility, utilization, and relevance of this data set to improve women’s health policies and practices based on the strategic framework provided by the HGWHI. Hologic’s strategy is to lead with our data contribution, convening, forming partnerships, and ultimately improve women’s health through action such as: care model transformation and implementation; technical innovations; engagement of policymakers; and women’s health leaders. It is notable that while the HGHWI is based on women’s voices, men are included in this survey as well. This inclusion allows a view of gender disparities and gender gaps in healthcare. In this work, women and men are defined by personal gender identification.

Grant Program Description

This grant funding is directed toward early career medical, policy, and public health professionals as individuals or teams (including graduate students) in the same areas of study. The opportunity focuses on the health women across their life span and the importance of women to families, communities, and economies. In the HGWHI, health is defined broadly by five categories as: preventive care, basic needs, opinions of health and safety, individual health, and emotional health (referred to as “five dimensions of health”). A successful application will: use the HGWHI data and the five dimensions of health framework to increase knowledge and understanding of challenges and opportunities for female health; to transform care models to be more inclusive; to determine a plan to improve health policies for women; and to prioritize women’s health in a country or region.

Projects regarding the following topics will be considered:

  • Research on effective healthcare models, programs and policies.
  • Research on innovations that improve women’s health including: the social determinants of health; prevention; diagnosis; treatment; and palliative care gaps.
  • Actions in a country or region for education/awareness on important women’s healthcare topics.
  • The importance of women’s health to human health, societies, and economic development. This can include research on the social and political obstacles that impede women’s health and how they could be addressed.
  • Research in the setting of gender disparities and determinants of the Program of Action of the ICPD1994. As women and men were included in the survey, these data are available to review and consider gender disparities and gaps in care in this research.

Grant Program Objectives

  • Grant Program Objectives
  • Demonstrate how this unique, large data set based on women’s healthcare experiences and perceptions can be used to understand challenges and opportunities as well as entry into the solution space to improve the health of women and girls.
  • Support and strengthen partnerships that advance awareness, prioritization, care model transformations and policies to improve women’s health.
  • Identify gaps and obstacles to improving the health of women and how these could be overcome.
  • Utilize the HGWHI and identify its effectiveness as a tool for improving women’s health.
  • Demonstrate the importance of women to families, societies, and economies and how health is inseparable from empowerment.
  • Demonstrate the critical connection between women’s health and gender equity globally.
