The late Dr. Tom Hall, a global health leader, was one of CUGH’s greatest friends and supporters. He passed away May 20th, 2017, but his legacy of giving lives on. Tom was deeply concerned about the health and sustainability of our planet. To address this challenge, he generously provided CUGH with a gift to support small grants for our members that would impact this challenge.

CUGH members are invited to apply for a Dr. Tom Hall Education Grant (each is under $5,000). 10 grants will be offered this year. Each Grant must be completed within 2 years from the time of the award. Projects should improve human and environmental outcomes through education or implementation.

Eligible areas of interest for grant support include but are not limited to:

  • Scaling up an initiative that addresses climate change, biodiversity losses or pollution.
  • Programs that improve planetary sustainability, protect ecosystem services or use a One-Health approach to improve human wellbeing
  • Strengthening educational programs in Low- and Low Middle-income countries related to improving human wellbeing and environmental outcomes.*
  • Creating relevant educational case studies in planetary, environmental or One Health
  • Special education-related events at the annual CUGH conference*
  • Identify and aggregate good practices, useful courses, teaching material, reports, and guidelines in the aforementioned areas of focus for open access sharing on CUGH’s website.
  • Supporting CUGH Trainee Advisory Committee activities and projects
  • To be eligible for consideration the grant application must :
  • Be consistent with the mission of CUGH (CUGH supports academic institutions and partners to improve the wellbeing of people and the planet through education, research, service, and advocacy)
  • Be consistent with the objectives of the grant to support programs or educational products that improve the environment, and human wellbeing.
  • Be completed with CUGH receiving a final report within 2 years from the time the award is received.
  • Have the potential to be scaled up.
  • Include a plan for sharing the program/products with relevant stakeholders, the public and /or policymakers.
  • Have a lead Principal Investigator who is an institutional or individual CUGH member.
  • Not be used to pay or supplement the salary of any staff.

The Following Criteria will be used to Evaluate Hall Grant Applications:
Criteria are listed for each category and may be scored up to a listed maximum. The overall maximum total is 100 points. Please ensure your application fulfills the following criteria:

  1. Project Title and description (500 words max)
  2. Scope of the project (250 words max)
  3. Potential for impact (500 words max)
  4. Methodology (250 words max)
  5. Workplan and timeline (pls include table/chart here)
  6. Dissemination and Sustainability of the Project (250 words max)
  7. Budget justification (300 words max)
