Barbara Astle, PhD, RN
Director, Centre of Equity and Global Engagement
Trinity Western University
Dr. Barb Astle, is an Associate Professor of Nursing, Director for the Centre of Equity and Global Engagement (CEGE), and Acting Director MSN Program at Trinity Western University in Langley, Canada. Her research program focuses on global health equity, human rights, competency-based global health education (including undergraduate/graduate/ host competencies and partnerships), and research literacy. She Co-Chairs the CUGH Education Committee’s Competency Sub-committee. She is an Institutional member of the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Researchers (CCGHR), and serves on the Advisory Board for the Global Nursing Caucus (GNC) in Boston, MA. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in global health, research literacy, leadership, knowledge translation, and healthcare policy. She publishes in areas related to global health education, human rights, and research. She co-authored the book “Research Literacy for Health and Community Practice” (2017), served as Chair and Past Chair of the Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) in 2009 – 2012, and was recipient of the Excellence in Nursing Education Award by the Association of Registered Nurses in British Columbia (2017).
Carlos Alberto Faerron Guzman, MD, MSc

Dr. Faerron has a degree in Medicine from the University of Costa Rica and a Master in International Health and Development from Queen Margaret University and the Vrije Universiteit. Additional studies include Social Justice at the Institute for Health and Development in Scotland, and Social Innovation for Health from INCAE Business School. He is a Fellow of the Central American Healthcare Initiative and sits in the Curricular Committee for the Master’s in Health and Sustainable Development at EARTH/-University and the American University of Beirut, as well as the Consortium of Universities for Global Health Competency Sub-Committee. He is currently Academic Director of the Organization for Tropical Studies.
Ayla Landry, MSN/MPH, RN

Ayla Landry studied nursing as an undergraduate at Texas Christian University and holds a Master of Science in Nursing and Masters of Public Health degree with a concentration in global health from Johns Hopkins University. In addition to being Co-Founder and CEO of Porches for Progress community development nonprofit that has a mission to propel ideas for progress from within resource-poor communities through collaboration and micro-grants, she has worked as a global health nursing professor and program design manager and has been a frequent speaker at national and international conferences on women’s health and public health nurse education.
LaHoma Smith Romocki, PhD, MPH

Romocki has worked in global health for more than 25 years with extensive field experience in French and English speaking countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
In July 2012, Romocki completed a 2 ½ year tour of service as the Peace Corps Country Director in Cameroon, successfully leading the 3rd largest program in Africa. Other career positions held include Associate Director at Family Health International (now fhi360), Senior Research Analyst on International AIDS issues for the White House Office of National AIDS Policy, and Health Educator with the NC Department of Health and Natural Resources.
Committed to increasing students’ awareness of global health problems, Dr. Romocki has led study abroad programs at North Carolina Central University where she is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health Education. She advises students interested in pursuing careers in the health professions, health communication and global health. Romocki teaches courses in global health and is the faculty advisor to two student organizations on campus with a global focus, GlobeMed and the Association of Students for a Better Africa (ASFABA) and board member on a third, Nourish International. She serves as a member of the Global Health competencies sub-committee of CUGH.

Jessica Evert, MD

Dr. Jessica Evert straddles international education and the medical profession. She served as CFHI Medical Director from 2008 to 2013 when she was appointed to the Executive Director role. Dr. Evert is Faculty in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where she instructs in Global Health and community-based underserved care and helped develop, as well as completed, the Global Health Clinical Scholars residency track. Dr. Evert is a graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine and is a longtime advocate for health-related international education quality and ethical standards. She is author and editor of multiple chapters, articles and books in global health with a focus on education, ethics, and asset-based engagement, including the seminal texts: 1) Developing Global Health Programming: A Guidebook for Medical and Professional Schools, 2nd Ed 2) Global Health Training in Graduate Medical Education, 2nd Ed and 3) Reflection in Global Health: An Anthology. She helped develop the Forum on Education Abroad’s Standards for Health-Related Undergraduate Programs.
